Pnin

"...I read Pnin [pronounced "P’neen"] on a train and laughed loudly all through the journey. This is not to say that the book is funny; it is much too fine for this...I think it is a splendid book." -John Cheever

"Pnin himself is one of the most attractive characters in literature." -Randall Jarrell

"How to describe it or its effects? I’ll settle for profoundly delightful, because under the wonderful and hilarious comedy, which any academic person at least will recognize at once and delight in, there is a deep pathos that takes us out of all academies into the befuddled sufferings of humanity at large...I honestly haven’t enjoyed a novel so much in a long time." -Mark Schorer

"...[Nabokov] turns out to be a master of English prose - the most extraordinary phenomenon of the kind since Conrad...[He is] something like Proust, something like Franz Kafka, and, probably, something like Gogol...[but he] is as completely himself as any of these other writers..." - Edmund Wilson

"It is hilariously funny and of a sadness..." - Graham Greene
